210108 Meeting

Presence: Prof Adrian Cheok, Eng Tat, Liu Wei, Weimin, Xiaoming, Xiaoyuan, Peter, Tim.

Presentation of the concept of the Confucius Computer based on Situated Learning can be found at the last section of this page. Overall its still too straightforward and need to explore more deep/complex ideas.

Motivation:
Environmental - We discussed about using Confucius computer to bring back traditional values to protect the environment.

Reference to lookup:
Eliza

Basic summary of what Confucius computer should be:
- an experience, think about international audience appeal.
- allows users' interpretation of the experience from using the system
- not obvious system, linear system could be too easy and boring for the users
ex: Food culture, Confucius cooking method.

- dealing with complex issues
- a combination of media, culture and art
- modeling part of the culture with computing

Work to be done:
- Extend on the concept of the chinese garden but make it more complex and not so linear/straightforward
- Explore concepts/ideas that have two sides/dilemmas
- Explore ideas that is not obvious but complex, for example applying confucius rules into food preparation
- Build a Virtual Confucius which includes nice visualization of the algorithms in use. One example is using multi layers neural network model

Xiao Ming:
To work on the chat engine and the visualization.

Peter:
To work on the thought engine and the visualization of the thought engine.

Project Concept 21012008 (to be revised):

Main Concept:

Confucius computer is a novel edutainment-computing platform that allows users to explore Confucian culture and philosophies in a mixed reality environment. Heart of the computing system is the Confucius Moral Engine where the Confucius philosophies and teachings are embodied in the form of computer algorithms.

Based on the Confucius six arts (礼,乐, 射,御,书, 数), we have derived three parameters, Virtue(德), Wisdom(智) and Body(体) to evaluate the player’s personality development in the game.

Each player has a 3D personality space based of these parameters. As each parameter can be in a positive or negative range, there are eight types of personalities.

During the game, based on the player’s actions, Confucius Moral Engine will evaluate and update the player’s parameter and hence the personalities.

Throughout the game, Confucius Moral Engine will offer advice to the players based on their action and current personalities. These advices are taken from Confucius text like the Analects, The Great Learning, Doctrine of the Mean, etc. "孔子教人,各因其材" Players action may be the same, but the advice given may be different based on their personalities.

This is a simulation of a learning environment in Confucius time, where Confucius will observe the different students’ actions and give them specific advice.

Motivation:

1. What is Confucianism?

Teaching about the development of personal characters and virtues in the context of interpersonal relations, like benevolence, righteousness, etiquette and trust.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confucius
His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism (法家) or Taoism (道家) during the Han Dynasty.[2][3][4] Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism (儒家).

http://www.crystalinks.com/confucianism.html
Confucianism is an East Asian ethical and philosophical system originally developed from the teachings of the early Chinese sage Confucius. It is a complex system of moral, social, political and religious which had tremendous influence on the history of Chinese civilization down to the 20th century.

2. Confucius Impact on Society

….. Science Technology, Education
….. Politics

3. Situated Learning – which describes the process of learning as highly social, embedded in the lives of learners. Much of the theory of situated learning centers on the notion of communities of practice, dynamic groups that are present throughout our lives in which we participate in various ways.
The focus is on learning by doing, and on addressing real problems. IT is a powerful aid to "doing" and to "addressing real problems."

Confucius – emphasis on social relationship.
practical and enjoyable way of learning 知之者不如好之者,好之者不如乐之者

朱熹 "孔子教人,各因其材"

Novel way of exploring and experiencing Confucius philosophy through social and physical interactive digital media.
Heart of the interactive system is the Confucius Moral Engine, which is a set of computer algorithms generated from Confucius teachings/philosophies.
Confucius Moral Engine analyses the interactions between the players in a mixed reality environment. The system will then update the players’ status in the game and provide suitable advice to them in real time.

System:

Inspired by the eight trigrams proposed by I-Ching:

The Yi jing is considered one of the five classics of Confucianism.

Mini Games:

1. Feng-shui Chinese Garden

Human and environment/nature has to be one.

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. The Chinese believe that by placing things to encourage the beneficial flow of Chi (Energy Force) you can create harmonious change, which affects your health, wealth and relationships.

Each player knows certain rules about the game. They are supposed to make use of their knowledge together to build the Chinese garden.

2. Fishing

1. Catch fish only when they are big enough. (rule 12)
2. Do not catch fish when there are few fishes. (rule 5)
3. Get points if you give fish to some one who lacks of fish. (rule 10)
4. Given several kinds of fishing tools, less point will be given if the user only use one and do not make good use of others. (rule 11)
5. Less point will be given if players only concentrate on his or her own fishing and does not encourage others (cooperate to catch fish). (rule 8)
6. Sometimes, the fish may die naturedly. If the user pushes the dead fish to other players, the point reduced. (rule 2)
7. When one player suffers from a storm and all of his fish are lost. Then others should share fish with him even they self have very few fish. (rule 5)
8. When someone’s fishing tools are out of work, others can get points by offering his extra tools. (rule 5)
9. Specific bait for certain fish, each player only has certain bait. Encourages sharing. If catch different type of fishes, get more points. (rule 1, 10)
10. Catching fish together, collective to catch bigger fishes.
